Iliwa
Island over 4 days
Day
one: Depart from Port Elizabeth on the 80-kilometre
trip to Addo Elephant National Park, where you will learn about
the habits of these behemoths, the best studied group of wild
elephants in the world.
Day two: We depart for Double Drift
game reserve, wading the Great Fish River near the remains of Fort
Double Drift, dating back to the frontier wars of the 1800's.
Day
two: We take a slow cruise
through the Inyati loop to spot giraffe, rhino, wildebeest, zebra,
blesbuck, the shy kudu and other antelope. We turn back for lunch
at the breathtakingly beautiful Adam Krantz viewpoint, and
overnight at a beautiful lodge in the 54 000 hectare reserve.
Day
three: An early
start ensures that we see more game as we cross the river again on
our way to Iliwa Island, where we set up camp well before
lunch. Your time is your own to swim, take a ride down the
river, splash down into the water from the cableway or saunter
down stream in search of the hippos. After
supper we go for a night walk to see some of the shy creatures of
the night. There is so much to do here that you may well consider
staying another day!
Day
four: Breakfast is followed by relaxing at the river,
looking for the hippos, visiting our San rock-art site dating back
thousands of years or having fun in the water. After lunch we
break up camp and depart for Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth.

6
Days close to Nature
Day
one: Depart from Port Elizabeth, heading west through
the Gamtoos Valley to the Baviaans Kloof wilderness area. Travel
through the scenic Old Van Stadens Pass en route to Jeffreys Bay,
surfing mecca to the world. Cool off in tranquil river pools of
the Baviaans while keeping a look-out for Cape buffalo. We spend
the night camping in the peaceful nature reserve.
Day
two: We make our way slowly up the winding Baviaans
valley, crossing the river repeatedly on our way to the historic
town of Graaff-Reinet, where we overnight in the town.
Day
three: We visit the nearby Valley of Desolation, and
head to the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock, where we
overnight.
Day
four: A long day ahead! We are up before the sparrows
and head south-east for Fort Beaufort to enter the Double Drift
game reserve. After viewing buffalo, wildebeest, rhino, giraffe,
hartebeest and many other species in the densely populated Inyati
Loop, we follow the meanderings of the Great Fish river, enjoying
some of the most majestic sights our country has to offer. We
finally cross the river (getting our wheels seriously wet!) and
pass by one of the forts dating from the Frontier Wars of the
1800's. We spend the night on the banks of the river at Kwanti's
own camp.
Day
five: We carry our tubes up-river, stopping to examine
San rock art, etched into the rock face many thousands of years
ago. A gentle 40-minute ride along the river brings us back to the
camp. There is also a cable ride that ends with a splash in the
water, and later we search for hippo lower down the river. There
is so much to do in this tranquil setting, that you may well
choose to spend another day here.
Day
six: Grahamstown shares some of the Frontier War
history with us, and then it is onwards to Addo Elephant National
park for a close encounter with the gentle giants. Share in our
intimate knowledge of the best-researched elephant group in the
world. The tour ends when we return to Port Elizabeth, some 80
kilometres further.
